The Future of the Handmade in a Digital World

Women’s Business Council Philippines (WomenbizPH) organized the The Future of the Handmade in a Digital World last September 1, 2023, Friday, 1:00PM to 6:00PM, The Podium Hall, Ortigas Center, Mandaluyong.

In this period of transformation and innovation driven by unprecedented digital technology, are the Philippine artisanal works and handmade industries able to absorb this level of change?  Should notions of heritage and legacies reboot in light of non-material technologies of making? What is the logic of revivals of tradition?

What are the ethical demands of community empowerment as traditions are transformed in their encounter with contemporary life?

This forum was  an  afternoon of conversations, considering stories that hope to address these questions and quandaries. Connecting the past with the present and the future—as we seek to sustainably manage change while nurturing a Filipino soul—promises to be a rich terrain of exploration.

We have invited Hon. Christopher de Venecia, Chairman of the Congress’ Creative Industries Committee and Marga Nograles, COO of the Tourism Promotions Board.  Other confirmed speakers include Marian Pastor Roces (Independent Curator), Mike Claparols (Creative Definitions, Negros Occidental), Noreen Bautista (Panublix, Iloilo), among others. This is also the first conference where the artisans and artisanal advocates from Basilan, Sarangani, Aklan, Kalinga, South Cotabato were on stage to speak and we heard their direct narratives on preserving heritage and sustainable livelihood.

Stay tuned.
