Workshop on Strategy of Human Rights in APEC, July 11-14, 2019 Taipei

  • Over 30 participants from countries such as  Vietnam, Japan, Laos, India, Taiwan, Indonesia, the Philippines, Tibet,  India, and Malaysia took part in a 3-day workshop last July 11-14, 2019 in Taipei.
  • The discussion revolved around the possibility of a human rights monitoring system using gender lenses  (like a regional or Asian human rights court),  similar to the European Convention on Human Rights that provided protection of human rights across Europe, the Americas and Africa.  It was explored that a strategy on human rights advocacy be established in APEC to help address human right abuses in the region.
  • The Philippine delegation included Women’s Business Council Chair Chiqui Escareal-Go,and WomenBizPh board trustee Atty. Lorna Kapunan  and Commission Karen Goimez-Dumpit from the Philippine Commission on Human Rights, who all served as speakers on topics focused on business and human rights.
  • This workshop was organized by the Chang Fo-Chuan Center for the Study of Human Rights of Soochow University, the Foundation for Women’s Rights Promotion and Development , The Institute of Human Rights and Peace Studies (IHRP) of Mahidol University, Research Center for Human Rights (RCHR) of Osaka City University and Global Voices, and sponsored by the Ministry of Science and Technology Taiwan.
